BioTotem™
A living untreated way-marker system made from sustainably sourced oak. Beautifully designed in above-ground pollinator bee habitat and below-ground beetle habitat featuring hand-pyrographed graphic artwork. Suitable for parks, gardens, public footpaths, housing estates, industrial parks, etc. Each BioTotem™ is handmade and incorporates a minimum of 150 holes for a variety of native solitary bee species, solitary wasps to nest in, plus a habitat for a vast array of other invertebrates. BioTotems should be dug into the ground up to 50cm deep, no less than 40cm deep. Wherever possible do not concrete them in, earth should be well compacted around the base with a hand rammer.
Note: BioTotems support wildlife both above and below ground, mimicking standing deadwood, an increasingly rare and vital habitat component within healthy ecosystems. In doing so, they create unique, moisture-regulated environments that favour fungi and a diverse range of invertebrate species, offering ecological conditions distinct from those found in fallen or stacked timber. As a naturalistic intervention, BioTotems have an inherently unpredictable lifespan dependent on site-specific conditions. For projects requiring greater, more predictable, longevity, alternative invertebrate posts are available that utilise different wood types and other methods to extend lifespans, we highly recommend exploring ‘Bee Posts’ by Niche as a comparative option.
Remember, when a BioTotem has visibly reached the end of its standing life, we recommend laying it down, ideally in situ or nearby, so it can continue to function as a valuable lifecycle resource for a different suite of species.
BioTotems tell an important story of Birth > Life > Death > Rebirth
