Welcome to Artecology’s Kids’ Zone!
Are you curious about nature, design, and science? Do you want to learn how we can make cities and coasts better for wildlife? Artecology is here to help you explore these topics in a fun and creative way—while also linking them to the subjects you’re studying in school!
Science: Living Things & Their Habitats
In science, you learn about how different animals and plants live together in ecosystems. At Artecology, we design special structures to help wildlife survive in cities and coastal areas. Here are some real-world examples:
• Rock Pools for Harbours and Sea Walls
In school, you study marine habitats, but did you know we can create new ones? Our Vertipools™ are artificial rock pools that attach to sea walls, giving sea creatures a home in places where there would otherwise just be concrete!
• NatureBricks™: Tiny Homes for Insects & Plants
You learn about pollinators like bees, but where do they live in busy towns? Our NatureBricks™ are special bricks that allow plants to grow in walls and give insects safe places to shelter…..and have you seen our BioTotems? Have a search and and see what you can find.
Geography: Sustainability & Human Impact on the Environment
In geography, you learn about how human activities affect the environment. But how can we fix the problems we’ve created? Here’s what we do:
• Flooding & Sustainable Drainage (SuDS)
Heavy rain can cause floods, especially in cities where rainwater runs off hard surfaces. At Artecology, we are designing Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) things like green roofs, rain gardens, and channels that help water soak into the ground instead of causing floods….we call the B-SuDS (biodiversity sustainable drainage systems.
• Biodiversity in Towns & Cities
Instead of just covering everything in concrete, we add wildlife-friendly designs to buildings, bridges, and parks to help animals survive in urban areas. Could you design a city where people and nature live together?
Art & Design: Nature-Inspired Engineering
At Artecology, we believe art and science go hand in hand! Our designs are inspired by the shapes, textures, and patterns found in nature.
• Biomimicry: Copying Nature’s Best Ideas
Did you know that Velcro was inspired by burdock plant seeds? We use biomimicry to design structures that work like natural habitats. For example, our NatureBricks™ have rough textures like a tree bark, so mosses and small creatures can cling to them.
• Create Your Own Nature-Inclusive Designs!
Want to try designing a wildlife-friendly building or park? Think about:
• Where would animals find food, water, and shelter?
• How can humans and nature share the same space?
• What natural shapes and materials could you use?
Take Your Learning Further!
If you’re working on projects in science, geography, or design, you can use real-world examples from Artecology to make your work stand out.
• Investigate: How does human development affect local wildlife?
• Design: Create your own nature-friendly building or street.
• Experiment: How can you make a small wildlife-friendly space at home or school?
Stay Curious!
We’re always exploring new ways to help wildlife in cities, rivers, and the sea. Keep learning, stay creative, and think about how you could help nature in your local area!
