Vertipools: Evidence in Action

In this video, Artecology co-founder Nige shares independent evidence showing just how effective Vertipools are in supporting coastal wildlife.

Two comparative studies highlight the impact:

  • A survey by Mac MacDonald recorded a 267% increase in species richness in Vertipools; more than double the gain achieved by the next best eco-engineering unit from another provider.

  • University of Plymouth researcher Claire Beckley found that Vertipools created through Artecology’s CoCreate method supported nearly four times the bio-abundance compared to standard Vertipools.

Nige explores how these results are possible through the use of handcrafting techniques. Yet, despite such clear data, he admits to the challenge of framing art and craft as a credible eco-engineering solution, a perspective that runs against the grain of today’s technology-first narrative. Still, the findings make a powerful point: if smaller, intricately designed objects deliver far greater ecological benefits than larger, less functional ones, then the path forward is hard to ignore.
